On October 6, observers on the ridge above Bridger Bowl counted 67 golden eagles in one day. No skier was on the hill below them, and the lodges were still dark. The fall count's season ends on October 31. That same date comes up again and again on this fall's calendar.
Opening day at Bridger Bowl is projected for Friday, December 11, 2026, depending on conditions. Most of the choices that shape a canyon winter come due long before then. Pass pricing, payment plans, the family discount, the eagle count and the Bridger Ski Foundation auction all close in the last week of October or the first days of November. Once December arrives, there is little left to decide except when to go up.
The Week That Does the Most Work
Here is everything that comes due between now and the first week of November, in order:
| Date | What closes or changes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Oct. 31, 10 a.m. | Bridger Ski Foundation online auction bidding ends | BSF Après Ski page |
| Oct. 31 | Bridger Bowl's 12% online family discount on Full and Value passes ends | Bridger Bowl season passes |
| Oct. 31 | Fall golden eagle count season on the Bridger Ridge ends | HawkCount site profile |
| Oct. 31 or Nov. 1 | Bridger Bowl payment plan window closes | Bridger Bowl FAQ |
| Nov. 1 | Bridger Bowl season pass prices move to the next tier | Bridger Bowl season passes |
| Nov. 3 | Preferred consignment registration for the BSF Ski Swap closes | BSF Ski Swap |
The payment plan date is listed twice because Bridger Bowl's own pages disagree. The season pass page says payment plans for Full, Value and Midweek passes are available "through November 1st, 2026." The FAQ says they are available through October 31. To be safe, plan around the earlier date.
The November 1 price change is big enough to plan for. In the current tier, an adult Full pass costs $1,100, and it rises to $1,250 on November 1. A junior Full pass goes from $605 to $680, and a child pass from $325 to $375. The adult Value pass moves from $925 to $1,050. The adult Midweek pass goes from $570 to $620. For a household with two adults and two juniors on Full passes, the gap between buying in October and buying in November comes to $450 before any discount. The 12% family discount applies on top of that, but only to qualifying online Full and Value purchases made through October 31, and there are listed exclusions. One small detail saves a trip. Your new pass loads onto last season's Bridger Bowl Card once the waiver, photo and payment are done, and a replacement card costs $5.
Up on the Ridge, October Belongs to the Golden Eagles
The flyway over the Bridger Ridge has a long record. Fred Tilly identified the range as an important fall raptor flyway and ran limited counts in 1979, 1980 and 1982. HawkWatch International began full-season fall counts at the site in 1991, with standardized single-site counts starting in 1992.
This year's numbers show how much the count changes once October starts. From the start of the fall season through October 7, 2026, observers logged 2,315 raptors, and 395 of them were golden eagles, about one bird in six. In the first seven days of October alone, they counted 342 raptors, and 185 were golden eagles, more than half. In one week, the count recorded nearly half of the season's golden eagles so far. Earlier in the fall, sharp-shinned hawks led the count, with 530 for the season through October 7. Eagle numbers move a lot from day to day. October 5 brought 3 golden eagles in nearly eight hours of watching, and October 6 brought 67.
The Montana Raptor Conservation Center's Bridger Bowl Raptor Fest took place October 3 and 4. The birds keep flying after the festival, though. The daily tallies are posted publicly on HawkCount's Bridger Mountains summary through the end of the season on October 31.
October 17 Is the Bash, and It Feeds the Deadlines
The Bridger Bowl Bash runs Saturday, October 17, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Jim Bridger and Saddle Peak Lodges. It is free and open to the public. Bridger Bowl calls it the official pregame to winter, with live music, food and drinks, a gear swap and activities for all ages.
Several parts of the day connect to the deadlines above:
- The ski clothing swap is a donate-and-take exchange, not a sale. Adult and child jackets, bibs, pants, gloves and goggles are welcome if they're in good condition, and nothing is priced.
- Gear repair comes through a partnership with the MSU Makerspace. Professional sewers will be on-site to teach repairs, but they won't do zippers.
- The canned food drive turns every 10 cans into one raffle ticket for a 2026-27 season pass, and you don't need to be present to win.
- Tuning is available in the rental shop, and all skier services will be open.
The Bash falls two weeks before the October 31 discount deadline, so the season pass raffle gets drawn while October pricing is still in effect.
Early November Moves the Season Down to Town
For a few weeks, ski season moves to the Gallatin County Fairgrounds. The Bridger Ski Foundation's annual Ski Swap runs November 7 and 8 there. Consignment drop-off is November 6. Preferred consignment registration runs October 1 through November 3, and the per-item fee goes up after that.
Two more Bridger Ski Foundation dates fall just before that weekend. Olympian Jessie Diggins gives a free public talk on Thursday, October 29, at 7 p.m. at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse, hosted by BSF and Montana State University. Tickets must be reserved in advance. The foundation's Après Ski fundraiser at Hardscrabble Ranch on October 30 is sold out. Its public online auction is open to everyone, though, from October 23 until 10 a.m. on October 31.
Crosscut Mountain Sports Center offers an early taste of winter on Saturday, November 14, with adult and youth beginner biathlon clinics. Registration closes when the clinics fill or 24 hours before they start.
December Opens the Canyon in Order
Once the deadlines pass, December is mostly a matter of showing up. The canyon opens over about three weeks:
- December 11. Bridger Bowl's projected opening day, depending on conditions. Bridger Bowl's free winter bus service from Bozeman, with stops at the Fairgrounds and MSU, starts the same day and runs through April 11, 2027.
- Mid-December. Crosscut usually opens for winter around now, depending on conditions, and it says rental bookings open in mid-December.
- December 19. Crosscut's 10th Winter Celebration marks the start of its tenth winter season, with more details still to come. Adult beginner, adult intermediate and youth beginner biathlon clinics run the same day.
- December 25. Crosscut is open Christmas Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for skiing, snowshoeing and fatbiking.
- December 30. Bridger Bowl welcomes 2027 with a spaghetti dinner, a torchlight procession by its Snowsports instructors and fireworks over the base area.
- December 31. Crosscut's Cosmic Night Ski runs from 4 to 8 p.m., with walk-up passes and rentals available.
Community Dual GS races follow on January 9 and 10. Each is a citizen race for alpine, tele and snowboard riders of all ages, with one run on the blue course and one on the red.
Some rules change with the season, too. Crosscut's trails become ski, snowshoe and fatbike terrain in winter, and hiking and trail running are not allowed. Crosscut's preferred public winter parking is the Base Area lot, and cars parked on Highway 86 will be towed. At Bridger Bowl, parking stays free and first-come, with lot shuttles on weekends and holidays. Lot A is reserved for vehicles with three or more people, youth ski school participants and skiers with a disability. On a busy morning, carpooling with a neighbor gets you into Lot A.
The Road North Has Its Own Calendar
If you drive MT-86 past the canyon, there's one more date to keep in mind. MDT's October 7, 2026 construction report lists work between mile markers 24.1 and 28.1, with single-lane traffic over two bridges, a 12-foot width limit, a 35 mph speed limit and gravel at the bridge ends. MDT's most recent posted project update, from September 2025, says temporary structures went in at Flathead Creek and Cache Creek because the old timber bridges had deteriorated. The update says those bridges and the one at Carrol Creek will be replaced with concrete box culverts. Construction is tentatively set for spring through fall 2027, depending on design completion and funding. Current conditions are posted on the MDT construction report and by phone at 511.
Kelley Schlauch keeps this kind of calendar handy because the canyon's seasons shape everyday life here as much as any floor plan does. If this winter's countdown has you wondering how far you'd like to live from the base area or the Crosscut trailhead, or what your current home might be worth before you decide, Kelley Schlauch can help with both.
